September 10th-12th
Westin Hapuna Beach Resort

This year, we gather on the Kohala Coast of Hawaiʻi at the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort to explore the theme of Resilience—a reflection of our collective strength, adaptability, and commitment to shaping a sustainable future for our communities.

ACTIVITIES & SESSIONS

  • He Moʻolelo no Koholālele takes participants on a storytelling journey from Hāmākua Hikina’s sea cliffs to Maunakea’s summit, exploring place names and Hawaiian ancestral practices. This immersive experience connects moʻolelo to hana noʻeau (arts) like ulana niu (coconut weaving) and kaula (cordage making), weaving tradition with Hāmākua’s living heritage

  • Participants will learn the specialized craft of net-making from Uncle Chuck himself, gaining hands-on experience in this essential fishing practice. This activity preserves an invaluable skill passed down for generations, connecting participants to the deep traditions of Hawaiian lawaiʻa.

  • Lauhala weaving (ulana lauhala) is a treasured Hawaiian tradition that embodies patience, skill, and deep connection to ʻāina. In this special session, Kumu Hulali Jewell and Haumāna, Council Member Rebecca Villegas will guide participants through the art of weaving and its cultural significance in daily life. Kona, long known for its master weavers, has preserved this tradition for generations. Lauhala weaving strengthens community ties, fosters mindfulness, and honors the relationship between people and ʻāina.

  • He waʻa he moku, he moku he waʻa teaches that balance, resourcefulness, and respect for ʻāina are essential for thriving. Offered by Laʻiʻōpua 2020, this experience intertwines waʻa (canoe voyaging) and kuʻi kalo (taro pounding), highlighting their deep cultural significance.

Participants will step aboard Waʻa Laʻiʻōpua, engage in traditional voyaging practices, and hear moʻolelo that connect waʻa and ʻāina. Just as voyaging requires stewardship of resources, tending to the land sustains the community.
